Câu hỏi gián tiếp trong tiếng Anh: công thức & cách dùng

1. Câu gián tiếp là gì?

Khi kể lại lời nói của người khác, ta không dùng cấu trúc câu hỏi trực tiếp, mà chuyển thành indirect questions. Giúp cho văn nói hoặc văn viết trang trọng hơn.

Công thức: Mệnh đề tường thuật + that + Mệnh đề được tường thuật lại.

Nguyên tắc cơ bản

• Trật tự từ: theo câu khẳng định, không theo câu hỏi.
  • He asked where Bob was. (❌ where was Bob)
• Thì: thường lùi về quá khứ nếu động từ chính ở quá khứ.
  • “Where is Bob?” → He asked where Bob was.
• Giới thiệu câu hỏi: dùng động từ như asked, wanted to know…
• Với câu hỏi Yes/No, dùng if hoặc whether.
  • “Is Bob at home?” → He asked if Bob was at home.

2. Cách dùng câu hỏi gián tiếp

2.1 Dạng wh- questions dùng trong câu hỏi gián tiếp

• Dùng what, where, when, why, how, which, who, whose, how much/many, how long/far/often.
• Công thức: S + asked(+O)/ wanted to know/required/wondered + Wh-words + S + V
• Ví dụ:

Direct: “Where is the nearest ATM?”
→ He asked (me) where the nearest ATM was.

Direct: “When will the results come out?”
→ She wanted to know when the results would come out.

2.2 Câu hỏi gián tiếp với dạng yes/no questions (if/whether)

• Khi câu hỏi trực tiếp yes/no, dùng if/whether.
• Công thức: S+ asked/ inquired/ wondered, wanted to know + if/ whether + S +V
• Ví dụ:

Direct: “Is the seminar free?”
→ She asked if the seminar was free.

Direct: “Will the meeting be online?”
→ He inquired whether the meeting would be online.

• Whether thường trang trọng/hai khả năng rõ ràng; đi với or not: whether… or not.
  

2.3 Động từ/mẫu mở đầu thường gặp

• Trang trọng: Could/Would you mind telling me…? / I’d like to know… / Would it be possible to…?
• Trung tính: Do you know…? / Can you tell me…?
• Tường thuật: He asked/wondered/wanted to know…

2.4 Thì & lùi thì khi dùng câu hỏi gián tiếp

• Tường thuật quá khứ thường lùi thì:
  • “Where is she?” → He asked where she was.
  • “Did they arrive?” → He asked if they had arrived.
• Sự thật hiển nhiên/đúng mọi lúc có thể không lùi: He asked where the sun rises.

2.5 Lưu ý về dấu câu & viết hoa trong câu hỏi gián tiếp

• Không dùng dấu hỏi cho mệnh đề gián tiếp trong câu trần thuật:
  • I wonder where she is. ✅ (dấu chấm)
• Dùng dấu hỏi nếu toàn bộ câu là câu hỏi lịch sự có chủ ngữ–động từ đảo ở intro:
  • Could you tell me where she is? ❓
• Viết hoa đầu câu; không viết hoa sau wh/if ở giữa câu.

3. Lỗi thường gặp & cách tránh khi dùng câu giáng tiếp

1. Đảo trợ động từ sai: … where does she live ❌ → where she lives ✅.
2. Giữ do/does/did trong mệnh đề gián tiếp: bỏ do-support.
3. Quên if/whether cho yes/no.
4. Sai backshift khi tường thuật ở quá khứ.
5. Dấu câu sai: đặt dấu hỏi khi chỉ là câu trần thuật.
6. Thiếu “that” (tùy chọn) sau intro trong văn viết trang trọng: Could you confirm that the meeting is at 2?

6. Ứng dụng trong giao tiếp & viết học thuật

6.1 Email chuyên nghiệp / lịch sự (work & academy)

Mục tiêu: xin thông tin/tài liệu/điều phối lịch… một cách tế nhị, rõ ràng.

Mẫu mở đầu (tăng dần mức lịch sự):

• Trung tính: Do you know…? / Can you tell me…?

• Lịch sự: Could you tell me…? / Would you mind letting me know…?
• Rất lịch sự/gián tiếp: I was wondering if/whether… / I’d appreciate it if you could… / It would be helpful to know whether…

6.2 Phỏng vấn/khảo sát (interviews, surveys)

Mục tiêu: câu hỏi mượt, tránh áp đặt, phù hợp thu thập dữ liệu.

Embedded questions (tế nhị, giảm thiên kiến):

• Could you tell me how often your team meets?

• Do you happen to know why the pilot failed?

• I’d like to know whether you received onboarding training.

Khi ghi chép/bảng hỏi (ngôi khách quan):

• Participants were asked whether they had completed the pretest.

• The survey inquired how long respondents had used the platform.

Gợi ý tránh dẫn dắt: dùng wh- trung tính (how often, how long, what factors) thay vì Don’t you think…?

6.3 Dịch vụ/CSKH & hội thoại công sở

• Could you tell me where the returns desk is?

• Would you mind telling me if this model is still under warranty?

• Do you know when the maintenance window will start?

Tăng mức lịch sự bằng modal/hedging:

• Do you happen to know…? (rất nhẹ nhàng)

• I was hoping you could… (mềm hoá đề nghị)

6.4 Viết học thuật (report, thesis, article)

Tường thuật câu hỏi (reported questions) – giọng điệu khách quan:

• The researcher asked whether participants had signed the consent form.

• We inquired how the metrics were computed.

• It was examined whether the treatment improved retention. (passive – trang trọng)

Khi cần nhấn hai khả năng/không chắc kết quả:

• This study investigated whether the effect persists or not across cohorts.

• The committee discussed whether to waive the requirement.

Lưu ý backshift: nếu động từ tường thuật ở quá khứ → lùi thì (is → was; have done → had done; will → would), trừ sự thật hiển nhiên/lịch trình.

6.5 Trình bày & họp (presentations/meetings)

• Could you let me know whether the Q&A will be recorded?

• I’d like to know when the slides are due.

• Do you know who will chair Session B?

Chuyển câu hỏi nhạy cảm thành embedded question:

• Thay vì: Why did you miss the deadline?

Dùng: Could you tell me what factors affected the timeline?
